He was later featured in Borgen III and Those Who Kill Two internationally well-known Danish dramas. He also had a prominent character in the BBC drama Sherlock, playing blackmailer Charles Augustus Magnussen. He played the Russian president in the American television series House of Cards. In 2018, he took home an International Emmy Award for his performance as the president in Russia in the Danish television drama Herrens Veje. It was broadcast in the UK in 2019. He has said that his brother and he first began learning English through listening to Monty Python records and learning the sketches from the comedy show.
